  • Healthy Eating at Work

With spring in full bloom, it is important to remember healthy eating habits to keep you energized throughout the day. Below are some tips to help you stay healthy and motivated at work.

    Keep Hydrated

Staying hydrated will help you stay alert. Fluids are needed for the body to digest food, cool down, move nutrients and waste. Adults typically need 9-12 cups of fluid per day.
    Choose water:

    • Take a water break instead of a coffee break
    • Carry your own water bottle
    • Find water “boring”? – add mint, lemon, lime, cucumber or berries to add flavour

    Grab and Go Meal Ideas

A healthy meal can help you maintain your energy levels and memory. Below are a list of meals to eat along the way to work.

    • Smoothie with frozen fruit, milk, plain yogurt, and a handful of spinach
    • Scrambled eggs and sliced tomato on whole grain toast
    • Oats with plain yogurt topped with fruit
    • Nut butter in a whole grain pita with sliced bananas

Healthy Foods to Make a Meal

Start off your workday right with a healthy meal to help improve energy, memory and manage weight. Keep healthy foods at home to put together a healthy meal to bring to work.

    • Piece of fruit
    • Hard boiled egg
    • Small whole grain bagel
    • Lower fat cheese
    • Whole grain cereal
    • Tomato
    • Lower fat milk or fortified soy beverage

  • Going Above and Beyond

When Bethany staff member Cora found out how much Bethany Cochrane resident George loved the Calgary Flames, she knew she had to do something. George is a huge Flames fan, his room is decorated with Flames attire and he was featured on People of Bethany wearing his Flames hat and speaking about his favourite player. Cora just had to figure out a way to get George to a game, and recently she was able to make the special surprise possible.

Being a season ticket holder to the Calgary Flames, Cora noticed all of the wheelchair accessible seating at the Saddledome. Cora began brainstorming how she could get George to a hockey game as he is in a wheelchair himself. After contacting her ticket representative, Cora was able to switch her seats to wheelchair accessible seats for a Flames game on April 2, Calgary Flames versus the Anaheim Ducks. Next, Cora contacted Knight Paramedical, one of Bethany’s transportation partners to make sure George had a safe ride to the game.

The night before the game, Cora said staff heard George cheering on the Flames in his sleep, shouting, “Go Flames Go!”. The day of the game, Cora, her husband and another staff member brought George to the Saddledome for the game, a chance for George to see his favourite team play live again. George had an excellent time at the game, thanks to Cora going above and beyond to help make a resident’s wish possible.

Thanks to our amazing staff like Cora, our residents are able to experience events they otherwise would be limited to. George was able to make a lasting memory out of this act of kindness.

  • Bethany’s New Spice Blend

Bethany is celebrating the test launch of a new spice blend. In partnership with Aramark, Bethany has developed a healthy spice blend to use on proteins such as chicken, beef and fish. Sapan Dutt, Director of Culinary for Aramark Canada began perfecting the spice blend in December 2016, and is now testing it at Bethany Calgary. In the future, Bethany hopes to launch this spice blend at every Bethany site.

Bethany’s House Spice Blend ingredients include handmined, unrefined full spectrum life crystal mineral salt (Himalayan salt), sesame seeds, black pepper, minced garlic, lemon peel, parsley flakes and rose hip. With this high quality spice blend made up of organic herbs, spices and the delicious mineral salt you can easily create a healthy and enjoyable meal.

Himalayan crystal mineral salt contains 84 minerals and has been proven to have many health benefits. Some of the benefits of Himalayan salt over regular table salt include detoxifying the body by balancing systemic pH, improving hydration, reducing muscle cramps by improving minerals and hydration, helping balance blood sugar because it provides unrefined, mineral-rich salt in an ionic solution, improving sleep by supporting blood sugar and hormone balance, acting as a powerful antihistamine, supporting weight loss by balancing hormones and improving energy and supporting thyroid function.

Sapan says that the goal is for Bethany kitchens to use this spice blend with the mineral salt instead of using regular salt. Sapan also hopes to introduce mineral salt to residents to provide them with the health benefits of it as well as the excellent flavour. Bottles of the seasoning will be available to purchase at Bethany Calgary starting this month. Proceeds from the spice blend will go towards expanding the blend to all sites or making site specific blends.

  • A Message from the CFO

In my letter to you this month I thought I would share with you some of the work my team does at this time of year. Indeed, this is a very busy time for many of us – we have just completed preparing Bethany’s budgets for the year that commenced on April 1, and are now preparing for our external auditors to arrive to review and provide their opinion on the financial statements for the year that ended March 31, 2017.

I fear that some of you think that an accountant’s work is quite boring. I am pleased that the people on my team share my excitement and enthusiasm for working with numbers. Fortunately, we also enjoy working with and interacting with the other People of Bethany, so I thought I would explain some of the principles that we use in our work that can be applied to many of the things that we all do, both at our work and in our personal lives.

There are actually more than a dozen principles that are applied in preparing financial information. However, in the interests of space and time I only plan to mention three of the ones that I believe are most relevant in this analysis. They are:

Reliability principle. This is the concept that only those transactions that can be proven should be recorded. For example, a supplier invoice is solid evidence that an expense has been recorded. In our regular lives, I see this as the principle that we should only share information that we know to be true and accurate, and avoid spreading rumors or being too speculative.

Time period principle. This is the concept that a business should report the results of its operations over a standard period of time. This may qualify as the most glaringly obvious of all accounting principles, but is intended to create a standard set of comparable periods, which is useful for trend analysis. In our regular lives, I see this as the principle that we need to think of what we do, and how people should measure us, over a longer period of time than just one interaction. How long a period should be will vary for different circumstances. For example, it could be for a new employee’s probationary period, or for the duration of a resident’s stay at Bethany, or for the period a unit is in outbreak, or for the duration of an audit etc.

Materiality principle. This is the concept that you should record a transaction in the accounting records if not doing so might have altered the decision-making process of someone reading the organization’s financial statements. This is quite a vague concept that is difficult to quantify and sometimes difficult for people to understand. In our regular lives, I see this as the principle that we need to be flexible in how we determine how important things are to others. An example of this was told to me by a friend several years ago when their mother passed away at one of our care centres. When they went to pick up their mother’s belongings, the only item that was missing was one that held a high sentimental value to the family. If any other article was missing the family would have shrugged it off. However, the loss of this item was a significant and material loss for the family. This is what makes this principle so difficult – it requires that we understand what is important to others!

I hope that this information may help us all to recognize that, while the People of Bethany may come from very different backgrounds, we are really similar in our common desire for Creating Caring Communities.

As always, I welcome ideas, suggestions and any questions that you may have. Please feel free to send them to me at Alasdair.Smith@bethanyseniors.com.

    Take care,

    – Alasdair

P.S. For those of you who are interested (there may be a few of you) the other principles are: accrual principle, conservatism principle, consistency principle, cost principle, economic entity principle, full disclosure principle, going concern principle, matching principle, monetary unit principle, and revenue recognition principle.

  • Health Ethics Week

In April, show your support for National Health Ethics Week by participating in a Staff Ethics Awareness session at your site. The ethics session will focus on nutrition and hydration at the end-of-life. Sessions will be hosted by staff members at each Bethany care centre.

National Health Ethics Week is a time for health and educational ethics committees, health care professionals, community businesses and society in general to host and take part in events that explore health ethics issues.

National Health Ethics Week is designed to:

    • Encourage events to raise awareness of ethics issues related to
      health across Canada
    • Provide greater visibility for Canadian ethics committees, services
      and supports
    • Provide an opportunity to engage in dialogue regarding current
      health issues facing their communities

  • People of Bethany T-Shirts

Bethany staff members were recently recognized for their contributions in support of our mission with a People of Bethany t-shirt. The t-shirts signify the importance that each Bethany staff member plays as part of our team. Since the launch, we are excited to see many staff members wearing these t-shirts with pride.

Please share your Bethany story with others if they ask you about the People of Bethany. We are all “People of Bethany” and recognize the contributions that each of us give at Bethany. Don’t forget to visit our Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/peopleofbethany/ to view stories from staff members, residents, family members and community partners.

  • National Volunteer Week

April 23 – 29 is National Volunteer Week. Volunteers play an important role at Bethany, helping our residents, families and employees every day. From April 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017, Bethany had 899 active volunteers contributing 57,941.5 volunteer hours! We are very thankful to have such dedicated volunteers who spend their free time at Bethany donating their talents to help us create caring communities. During National Volunteer Week, be sure to thank our Bethany volunteers for all that they do!

Volunteering at Bethany as an employee can also be beneficial for you. Volunteering helps create strong relationships and can give you a sense of purpose. Volunteering also contributes to healthy aging, impacting your social, emotional and physical well-being. Older adults who volunteer have been seen to have less stress related illness, higher self esteem and less feelings of isolation.

Popular volunteer roles at Bethany include friendly visitor, mealtime companion, activities assistant, occupational/physio therapy volunteer assistant and musicians/entertainers. If any of those roles appeal to you, please see the volunteer coordinator at your site to join as a volunteer. This month we encourage you to get involved with Bethany, or another organization you are passionate about and spend some time helping out in the community.

  • Service Success Stories from Bethany Staff

A couple years ago, myself and the volunteer coordinator were determined to start a men’s woodworking group. We managed to have all the supplies donated to us and I facilitate it once a week. We adapt the individual projects to the ability level of the resident. The gentlemen enjoy socializing together and reminiscing about the woodworking they personally did throughout their lives. They share memories and often there is
    much joking and laughing.

Residents from all house units are encouraged to participate and welcome to join. The residents are very appreciative of what I do for them in the group, and I always remind them and thank them for teaching me about woodworking. It is an opportunity for me to see them feeling confident and happy and I get to learn more about them at the same time. Many of the men offered their projects to be sold at our annual craft market and all the money raised went back to fund outings for our low income residents!

  • Service Success Stories from Bethany Staff

On my evening shifts there is one resident that frequently requests “a slice of toast” for a bedtime snack. Toast is not on the snack cart. It is an opportunity for me to do “a little extra” by taking the time to please her with
her request. Her smile of appreciation makes it so worthwhile.
